Welcome to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania!

The eyes of the world will be on Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in June 2007: the German government is hosting the G8 summit in the Baltic spa town of Heiligendamm, putting Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the limelight of international interest.
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is a beautiful region. Many of its towns and villages shine in new splendour. Streets, railways, sea- and airports have been completely modernised and renovated since 1990.

Popular holiday destination

In summer Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is Germany’s most popular holiday region. In 2005 there were some 24.5 million hotel bookings by 5.8 million visitors. The numbers also increased in the first four months of 2006.

The Baltic coast and interior with over 2,000 lakes offer relaxation, variety and adventure – something for every holidaymaker.

Year after year millions of tourists are drawn to the region, not only by the beautiful scenery and unspoilt nature but also by the rich cultural diversity, castles and manor houses, architecture from the hanseatic period and the red brick Gothic cathedrals and town halls.

Also, with more than 50 spas and health resorts, the region aims to become Germany’s top region for health. Already there are more than 86,000 people working in the healthcare industry.

The economy is growing

The region has become an attractive economic location. There is positive growth in the agricultural and food industry, the maritime industry, wind energy industry, the supplier industry for air and space travel, the automotive supply industry and also in timber.

In the last four years approximately 10,000 jobs have been created as the direct result of new companies or indirectly as part of follow-up investments. Investors in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania benefit among other things from a quick-acting efficient administration, attractive incentive conditions, state-of-the-art transport infrastructure and motivated workforce.

Jobs created

A large number of new jobs have also been created in tourism, in biotechnology and medical technology as well as in information and communications technology. In the region’s IT sector alone, 14,000 people are employed in 600 companies.

There are currently 375 companies located in the region’s 20 technology centres, seven of them interdisciplinary and 13 concentrating on a single technology or industry.

Attractive educational opportunities

Our region is also attractive to students: Rostock University was founded in 1419, Greifswald followed in 1456, so the universities of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are among the oldest in northern Europe.

Today, in addition to these two universities there are also three efficient universities of applied science in Stralsund, Neubrandenburg and Wismar which attract students to the region as well as a college of music and theatre in Rostock.

With an attractive range to choose from, an excellent standard of support and modern facilities, studying in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is both good and effective – and there is no shortage of leisure activities.
